Day 17_Masage is awesome!

It was so comfortable to sleep in for a morning! I got up short after 8 and went down to have breakfast. Oh, I miss SP Grand Day’s breakfast so I ate a little bit too much. I guess I have to start control my appetite a little bit because I don’t want to gain too much weight during this trip.
After the breakfast, I tried to start working on my presentation slide but the wireless was not that great so it took me a while to find a spot that gave me relatively stable wireless connection.
It didn’t take me very long to prepare the slides; I talked about Kudumbushree and their projects as well as its connection to my future academic objective in the U.S.
At about 1, we left the hotel and went to visit College of Engineering and interacted with them for a while. At JC Alexander Hall, we met some of the faculty members and students studying at College of Engineering and we did self-introduction for both school’s student. Jerry talked introduced urban planning program in the U.S, particularly program at the U of I, as well we its curriculum setting. He also talked about his research focus, which is how housing market collapsed in the U.S. and how we could prevent it in the future. Jerry also talked about his research plan with a professor from Florida State University that is going to study urban planning and women health in an area where Kudumbushree conducts projects that help women.

Later, 3 students representative from the College of Engineering presented their projects on urban planning about Kochi. It was really impressive to see the results of their worked conducted in 6 weeks.
Finally it came to the one of another great part of the trip which is massage at a beach resort. The resort is right by the Arabian see so the sea view was really pretty. We did massage four in a group and each of us was massaged in an individual room. The massage was pretty enjoyable and I really liked the scent from the oil the lady used on my body.

Day 16

Speical mission team! (Jeremy was taking picture for us)
Today we were still at the mountains. At about 5 am, we were all in the lobby and ready to go because we were trying to get in line early and make it to the first fleet boat touring in the reserve. So the bus took off and we arrived at the line for the bus. While we were all sleepy and waiting for next “order” from Jerry, I heard him calming Dana’s, Jeremy’s and my name and he asked us to go on a special mission for him. I got off the bus with other three and I had no clue about what’s going on and what we were going to do. We walked to the entrance gate of the reserve and Jerry told us about the plan that could help us getting seats for the whole group. The plan was we ride with an auto first and the auto driver will try his best to make it first to the gate for “running race” to get the forms that guarantee seats on first fleet.
Teammates!

I didn’t realize how intense the race was until we actually got on the auto and the entire auto drivers started racing crazily. Our driver made us about the third group that arrived at the gate and once we all got off the auto, we all started running like monsters were chasing us behind. Dana and Jeremy were really fast and I was a little bit behind but that’s OK. When I arrived at the ticket office, our driver already got us some forms to fill out and he dragged me out of the crowd of Indian men that tried to get forms. Once four of us get the form, we filled them out for the entire group quickly and Jerry went to the ticket office and got tickets for the first fleet successfully.
While four of us were resting and trying to calm down from the intense race, the rest group arrived shortly. That was when the sun started to come out and it was so pretty in the reserve with the mountains and lake could be seen clearly. The water started evaporating from the lake as the temperature goes up a little bit and it makes people feel like they are in heave. EE said some people must have filmed some movies and it’s a pity if nobody had done it.
Gorgeous view of the mountains and the lake!

EE and Kehla, and I

Soon we got on different boats but we all set off at about the same time and we saw some of the birds and wild lives coming out. It was really nice and enjoyable to see around the mountain and immerse ourselves in the beautiful view of the reserve. After the boating, we went to have breakfast at a nice hotel and I got masala dosa and shared a cheese omelet with EE. Oh, I finally had creamy cheese again!
Masala Dosa! Delicous!

Short after the breakfast, we checked out of the hotel and went to the spice outlets of the plantation we visited the day before. I think lots of us spent quite amount of money there and I got pepper flake, garlic power, white pepper powder, lemongrass oil, some handmade soaps and something else I don’t remember. After the spice shopping, we went on the road and headed back to hotel in Trivandrum.
Beautiful view of valley on the way

It was seven hours driving and everybody was exhausted after we arrived at SP Grand Day. We felt like we were backing home because SP Grand Day was such a nice hotel to stay at.
This time I got a new roommate Dana B. so I have to say my last roommate Kehla and it was a little bit sad to do it. I miss being your rommie, Kehla!
After I little bit clean-up, I went to bed. That’s about it for the long day with an exciting start and long road trip.

Day 15_ Elephant rides and spices!

We left the hotel at Thrissur early in the morning and headed to a town called Thekkadi. Thekkadi is located on the mountain “Western Gods”, if I’m not mistaken, and there are lots of markets full of shops. Lots of the shops are for jewelries, especially silver jewelries, and spice shops.

It took us about 7 hours to get to Thekkadi and I even got a little bit motion sickness because of sitting at the back of the car. However, Ingrid was nice enough to exchange seat with me so I could sit at the front. I think I felt much better after I changed where I sit. On the road to Thekkadi, I saw a really pretty temple. We got off the bus to take some pictures with the temple and the mountain. Thanks to the nice weather, the pictures we took are really cute. The break also gave us a chance to stretch legs a little bit and breathe some fresh air.

We arrived at the hotel at about 2:45 pm and some of us had a nice lunch at the restaurant of the hotel. I got Gobi Masala and sweet corn soup and they were really delicious! And I really some fiber and vitamins supplement from grain and vegetable.
After the lunch break, we went to elephant ride and it was really enjoyable. Dana, EE and I rode 22-year-old female elephant called Shumaya (I believe) and she was really cute.

We also went visiting a spice plantation and a guide showed us around and explained various kinds of spices, along with their names and effects. Jerry said we are going to the spice plantation’s outlets store to buy some spices tomorrow so there was no hurry for spice shopping.
Short after getting back from spice plantation visiting, some went to a martial art show while EE and I went on shopping around the market. I bought a silver bracelet with stones, which was pretty expensive but I loved a lot. EE finally bought 2 pairs of rings that fit her! Congratulations, EE! Later, we went into a silk store and I bought a pashmina and a hand-made mat that got a pattern of elephant. I bought it for my new house and I hope my parents would like it.
I had a lot of fun today and actually I think we all did. Tomorrow we are going to a boat ride to see wild lives but in order to do that, we have to get up really early. The plan is meeting at the lobby at 5 am. That sounds a little bit early than usually, so I guess gotta go to bed early tonight!

Day 14

This morning we went to production unit of Talikulam Vikas Trust, which is a public Trust that promotes the overall social development of Talikulam Grama Panchayat.
At the production unit of the Trust

Among all the production lines they have, we visited the production line of jeans jacket, the production line of underwear.

After we have seen a little bit of production process of those production lines, we were given the presentation about what is Talikulam Vikas Trust and how it is operating right now. I feel like this trust has done an excellent job in improving the wellbeing of the Talikulam Village. It basically covers every aspect of the villagers’ lives; specifically, it provides employment for all, houses for all, education for all, health for all, and social security for all.
The presentation of Talikulam Vikas Trust

We were told that staffs of the trust would go door to door in the village and ask people really detailed questions about their life and then determine what they could do help villagers to live much more better lives. For example, for those female workers we have seen working in the production line, they were done surveys and then they were provided with training and employment opportunities based on their previous skill level. They are also picked up from their houses and go to work at a really safe working environment. Those female workers are also provided lunch and something even more.
A lady from COSTFORD also gave a presentation on COSTFORD’s activities out of construction. The activity we learnt about was a bunch of self-help groups and joint leverage groups coordinated by COSTFORD that focus on women empowerment and poverty alleviation. They have done great jobs especially in the area of providing funding to woman by link them to banks and get fundings.

After the lecture, we went to a daycare center for elders where left-alone old people are taken care of and spend time with other elders and daycare workers. When we came in, they were singing and dancing, leaded by two daycare workers. Later, one of the old ladies started singing and dancing happily in front of all of us, like the focus of a party. We all surprised to know that when this lady first came, she would not talk to anybody and now she is having great time at the daycare and even bringing happiness to other elders who may have suffered loneness before just like her. We also spent time having lunch with those elders at the daycare center. The old gentleman who was sitting next to me and EE is already 89 years old and he looks perfectly healthy and happy.

In the after, we also visited several of micro-enterprise units, which contain one unit that making sandals with palm tree leaves and another unit that produces and sells spices.

Today we were also taken to a big circle, which I guess it’s like the downtown area of the city of Thrissur and we shopped for two and half hours. When we came back to our van, our nice drivers pointed to us there was a place where a bunch of guys were raising elephants so we went to visit and took lots of pictures with some of the giant but super cute elephants

After the elephant visiting, we headed back to the hotel we are staying at. I was also really lucky that we found an American comedy on TV called “Bridesmaids” with Kehla. The movie was so hilarious and touching so we really had a great roomie time together.
I think I had a really meaningful and fun day and I am satisfied.

Day 13- The most boring day of the trip!

After having a nice breakfast at the hotel, we said goodbye with the nice hotel manager and his lovely daughter and went to the conference titled “Finding Innovative Poverty and Climate Solutions for India”
A lot of really inspiring speaker spoke about multiple social issues in Kerala or other parts of India but it was soooooooo boring. I just started reading the info about speakers, well, at least scanned through it. Then I started writing down some points I came up for the next assignment about improving driving experience in Trivandrum.
Inspiring but super boooooooring conference!

The center where we had the conference

Even I feel like the conference is like such a waste of time, I think we still got a lot of goodies from it. First the breakfast was good, so was the afternoon tea food. I loved the croissant-like texture Indian food. We also enjoyed half of day’s AC.
Finally we left the conference place and around 5 pm and went on the road to go to our next hotel.  The first thing we all did after getting into the lobby of hotel was asking the front desk the password for wireless immediately and got connected. I finally got to talk to my mom (missing you so much, mom!) Then we went to each other’s room and got settled, but most of us went down to use the Internet and do some course work. We needed to get caught up with our blogs, plus we also have the next assignment due tomorrow.
So that’s about it for today.
